Coconuts are our bread and butter here at First Grade International. Our wide range of coconut products are used to make a huge variety of delicious snacks and meals that range from tasty Thai and Indian curries, to energising protein bars, to refreshing cocktails like Pina Coladas. But beyond just a yummy flavour, coconut is valued for its many health benefits, internal and external. That’s why nowadays coconut is an increasingly popular choice to use in the food and cosmetic industries. In this article, we’re going to explore the many health benefits that coconut can bring to your life, and show just how perfect it is for the health-conscious consumer of today.
- Coconut is highly nutritious and packed full of minerals
Go into any supermarket now and you’ll see way more brands featuring coconut than ever before. That’s because food companies have discovered just how much dietary goodness is packed into one small coconut. For one, it’s full of minerals that help your body perform its vital functions. It’s high in manganese, which is essential for bone health and helping your body metabolise proteins, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. What’s more, coconut is rich in iron and copper, which help form your red blood cells, and selenium, an antioxidant that protects your cells against unstable molecules and thereby slows down ageing and reduces the risk of heart disease.
- Coconut gives you a burst of energy
Unlike many other fruits with high levels of carbohydrates such as bananas, apples, and grapes, which can make you feel sluggish, coconuts are higher in fat, but a rarer type of dietary fat made up of something called medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s). MCT’s are metabolised differently to regular fats, absorbed directly from the small intestine and used to generate your body’s energy. You might have noticed athletes increasingly drinking coconut water – this is because MCT’s enhance your endurance and cognitive focus, and give athletes those important boosts of energy.
- Coconut fights against harmful bacteria
On a deeper level, several research studies over the years suggests that coconut oil can help your body fight against bacteria that causes nasty foodborne illnesses. Around 45-50% of coconut oil is comprised of lauric acids, which, when consumed and broken down during digestion, turns into an organic compound called monolaurin which acts as a microbial agent. A recent lab study carried out in 2025 by the Department of Biological Science at Brazil’s State University of Santa Cruz found that, likely due to the lauric acid and monolaurin, coconut oil helped protect against pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori and Streptococcus pyogenes, which when active in your body cause cramping, diarrhoea, and vomiting.
Coconut meat, water, and oil are also high in phenolic antioxidants. Similar to selenium, they defend your body’s cells against unstable molecules that increase the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease. These antioxidants also have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties which have many positive effects, including reducing inflammation and promoting wound healing. They also maintain your skin’s moisture and protect the skin from external substances, big reasons why coconut oil is so popular in cosmetics brands!

- Coconut helps manage your blood sugar
Various studies have found that consuming coconut products such as oil or water can help the body better regulate its blood sugar levels. This can be attributed to many different things – for one, a coconut’s low level of carbohydrates and high levels of fat. Coconut also contains bioactive compounds like ellagic acid, butin, and querceti, and increases the body’s triglyceride levels, both of which also help keep blood sugar levels consistent (coconut water is also a good source of potassium, which balances the sodium levels in your body and thereby regulates blood pressure). Moreover, coconut’s high fibre level can help slow digestion.
So, to sum it all up, not only is coconut full of flavour, but it’s highly nutritious and energising, and packed full of minerals and antioxidants that leaves you with healthier skin and a healthier body.
